The Remodeling Process

Decide on the project - Visually and mentally review the project and decide if it's realistic and meets the needs of your family.

Gather Information - Review the information available for similar type projects. Review images and get an idea of what types of materials you want used in the project. Consult with family members. Draw a diagram.

Get Estimates of Cost - Contact a number of contractors and get estimates for the project.

Decide on a budget - Decide on how much you are able to spend on the project. With most projects the cost can vary depending on materials used and the extent of the work. Discuss possible options with your contractor.

Hire the Contractor and Sign a Contract - Deciding on which contractor to hire is the most important step of your project. Take your time and ask questions. Review any available information about the contractor. Ask the contractor for references. Review the contract closely with the contractor and make sure you understand and agree with all terms and conditions of the contract.

Prepare the area - Clear the area so the contractor and workers have open access to the project. Clear areas that will be needed for the temporary storage of material and supplies. Assure that your contractor has entry to the parts of your home needed to complete the project.

Monitor the work - Monitor the work as it is being done to make sure it is as you intended it to be. Keep in contact with the contractor and discuss any issues as they arise.

Completion Walk Through - Once completed, walk through the project with your contractor. Verify that everything is working as intended. If issues remain after completion of the work, discuss with the contractor how the issues will be resolved.
